Before and Becoming: What Losing 100 Pounds Taught Me About Keto After 40

For so long, I thought arriving meant reaching a number.

I could picture the goal. What I couldn’t picture was how much I would learn along the way—or how my needs would keep changing once I got there.

Losing 100 pounds is part of my story. So is learning to build a life that supports the woman I’m becoming.

That’s the heart of Before and Becoming, my latest film. In it, I share seven things I wish I’d known before starting keto in my 40s, and the perspective I’ve gained beyond the goal weight.

What I wanted from the number

There’s something reassuring about a measurable goal. It gives you a destination and a way to track your progress.

But a number can’t tell the whole story of how you’re living.

It doesn’t tell you whether your meals leave you satisfied, whether your routine fits the demands of your day, or whether you have enough flexibility to keep going when life changes.

Those questions began to matter more to me. I still cared about my progress. I also wanted an approach I could actually live with.

Learning to pay attention

Over time, I began asking different questions.

What helps me feel supported? What leaves me feeling depleted? Which habits make my days easier—and which ones require more energy than I can keep giving them?

Food remained part of that conversation. So did sleep, hydration, and the everyday structure that makes caring for myself a little more manageable.

I wanted satisfying meals and routines I could return to. I wanted room to adjust without treating every adjustment as a failure.

For me, that has become an important part of low-carb living after 40: paying attention, learning from my experience, and allowing my approach to evolve.

A rhythm that can grow with me

The woman who started this journey had a goal. The woman I am today has more perspective.

I can appreciate what she accomplished while recognizing that I may need something different now. My routines can change as my life changes. Progress can include learning when to simplify, when to reassess, and when to give myself a little more room.

I’m building a rhythm flexible enough to evolve with the woman I’m continually becoming.

That feels like a meaningful kind of arrival.

If my story has you thinking about your own journey—whether you’re preparing to begin, finding your way back, or discovering what comes after a goal—you don’t have to have every step figured out. A thoughtful first step is enough.

Your next chapter can start with something simple.
